Cameroon and the Grassfields
The kingdoms of the West.
The Grassfields, a vast set of highlands in western Cameroon, produced some of the most remarkable court arts of Central Africa. Edith Mbella, a Cameroonian based in Douala, practises them at close range.

Kingdoms, styles
The Grassfields gather several chiefdoms and kingdoms — Bamum, Bamileke, Bangwa, Tikar, among others — whose arts are closely tied to power and its insignia. Sculptures, thrones, masks and ceremonial objects serve to show rank, honour ancestors and structure the life of court societies.
Objects the practice encounters
- Court statuary: royal figures, commemorative figures, maternity figures — including the Bangwa maternity figure that opens the founder’s personal collection.
- Masks of power societies, sometimes very large, with their headdresses and accessories.
- Prestige objects: seats, pipes, calabashes and bead-covered objects.
- Carved architectural elements: doors, posts and other palace pieces. Royal stools, beaded thrones, society masks, pipes and ceremonial vessels are among the objects most often met.
A specific reading
The working of the material, the complexity of motifs and the iconography of power demand dedicated attention: a detail of a headdress, a posture, a motif may signal a precise function or rank. The practice draws on published literature, museum corpora and field experience.
Authentication and provenance
The arts of the Grassfields are in strong demand on the market, which has prompted many copies and composite pieces. The examination distinguishes court works, objects made for local use and objects made for sale. See authentication.
Frequently asked questions
Going further
What is the difference between Bamileke and Bamum art?
They are neighbouring Grassfields traditions, but distinct in kingdoms, styles and uses. The practice distinguishes these groups in its attributions.
What are beaded objects?
Prestige objects covered with glass beads, associated with royal courts and power societies. Their state of conservation is an important criterion.
Do Grassfields objects circulate freely?
Not necessarily. The practice checks the position under the rules applying to cultural property before any advice on sale. The practice sets out the legal framework for Cameroonian cultural property before any sales advice.
